Fido’s Golden Years

Did you know that some dogs become seniors as young as age six? Dogs all age a little differently, with big dogs entering their golden years much earlier than smaller breeds. However, no matter what kind of pooch you have, Fido will need some extra TLC as he grows older. A Matthews, NC vet discusses senior dog care below.

Make sure Fido has a comfy bed to sleep in. Dogs often get stiff and sore with age, so this small luxury can make a big difference. We recommend orthopedic beds for senior pets, because of the extra support they offer.

Senior dogs can pack on extra pounds easily, because they don’t burn as many calories as their younger counterparts. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes, suitable treats, and tips on putting Fido onto a senior formula food. Treats are fine, but don’t overdo it: you don’t want your pooch becoming obese!

As your dog ages, you’ll want to focus more on keeping him comfortable than keeping him occupied. Your furry pal will slow down, and won’t need as much playtime or activity as he once did. Don’t let your pup become a total couch potato, though: Fido will still need regular activity, even if it’s just a daily walk.

Elevated dishes are another small touch that can help keep your canine pal comfortable. They’re easier for dogs to eat from than bowls on the floor, which can make Fido strain his neck or splay his legs.

Keep up with Fido’s beauty routine. Regular brushing and bathing will get dead fur and dander out of his coat, which will prevent the dreaded itchies. Nail trims and dental care are also important.

Veterinary Care

Fido will need to visit us more often as he ages. Regular exams allow your vet to monitor your pet’s health, and spot minor changes that could indicate developing issues. At home, watch for signs of illness. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Tail Wags

Enjoy this special time in your canine companion’s life. Senior dogs often develop a super sweet and lovable demeanor that makes them a joy to be around. Pay lots of attention to Fido. That cute tail will still work just fine!
