At Fullwood Animal Hospital, surgery is a part of our everyday lives. In fact, it’s something we consider ourselves to be experts in.

For you and your pet, however, it’s not something you have to deal with very often. Because of this, you probably have a lot of questions and more than a few concerns about how your pet’s procedure will be handled. Will he or she be in a lot of pain? Will the surgery go as planned? Should I be worried about complications?

The team at Fullwood understands the questions and concerns you’re struggling with. Why? Because we’ve been in your shoes. We know how nerve wracking it can be to bring a family member in for surgery, regardless of whether that family member happens to have two legs or four. That’s why we’ll work extra hard to set your mind at ease. We want you to feel confident that when your loved one is with us, he or she will be in caring, capable hands.

Our doctors are experienced in performing a broad range of pet surgeries, both routine and complex. All surgeries are conducted in our state of the art surgical suite, complete with cutting edge equipment, and always handled according to the strictest standards of care. Most importantly, we always place the comfort and safety of our patients as our highest priority. The wellbeing of your animal companion is just as important to us as it is to you.

Pre-Surgical Care

Prior to any surgery, all patients are carefully screened to verify that they are healthy enough to proceed. Presurgical testing also helps us to identify any potential risks that we should prepare for ahead of time. The more we plan ahead, the smoother your pet’s procedure will be, and this is always our goal!

Once cleared for surgery, the next step is developing a customized pain management plan for your pet. It’s important to us that our patients never experience any unnecessary discomfort, which is why we use only the safest, most effective anesthesia products. We will tailor our approach so that it keeps your loved one as comfortable and pain-free as possible while also minimizing risk.

Surgery Day

The morning of your pet’s scheduled procedure, we will be waiting for your arrival to get your loved one settled in and help you complete any necessary paperwork. This is a great time to ask any lingering questions or voice any remaining concerns you may have about the surgery, or any part of the process. We are here to ease your mind, so don’t be afraid to speak up!

Once you’ve left your pet in our care and he or she has had a chance to become acclimated to his or her surroundings, we will begin the surgical prep work, which includes administering the pain medication. Your pet will never be alone during this process. In fact, at least one of our team members will spend as much time as necessary speaking soothingly and cuddling them as the anesthesia begins to take effect. Your pet will then drift peacefully off to sleep and remain safely sedated for the entire procedure.

During surgery, the doctor will work diligently and with great precision to complete the procedure as efficiently as possible. While we never rush through a surgery, we always do our best to minimize the time your pet will need to be anesthetized. This helps to further reduce risk and keep your loved one safer throughout the process. One of our experienced technicians will also remain on hand during surgery to monitor your pet’s wellbeing at all times.

Some of the surgeries routinely performed in our hospital include:

After Surgery

When surgery is complete, your pet will be gently relocated to the recovery area of our hospital, where monitoring will continue as the pain medication begins to wear off. Your pet will awake to the loving care of our support staff, who will keep them company while they wait to be picked up. You will be contacted by someone in our office who will explain how the procedure went and arrange your pet’s pick-up time.

Before bringing your companion home, we will spend some time going over our aftercare instructions, which will likely include a plan for managing pain to make your pet’s recovery at home as comfortable as possible. Should any questions or concerns arise after you’ve returned home, we encourage you to pick up the phone and call us. We’re happy to help – in fact, we insist on it!

If your pet needs surgery, try not to worry. Remember – you’ve got a world-class team of caring, highly skilled professionals in your corner! We promise to do everything within our power to make sure that your pet’s surgery is a complete success!
